How wide should the opening be for a 30 stove?
Most standard stoves are 30 inches wide, around 25–27 inches deep (excluding handles and knobs) and 36 inches tall (excluding control panels). These standard stove sizes are designed to fit standard cabinet cutouts that are 34-1/4 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 36 inches tall.
Guidelines recommend 15” of space on either one or both sides of an oven, or if the oven is in a tall cabinet and this is not possible, to have 15” of landing space no more than 48” in front of the oven as long as it does not open into the main walkway. Below is an application of this guideline in a wall oven space.
There really isn't a standard range size, but most styles are 30 inches wide. Space-saving ranges can be as little as 20 inches wide. Upscale or professional-style ranges can be 36 inches to 60 inches wide.
Slide-In Ranges generally require a 30" wide cabinet cutout opening. However, some product dimensions may show the overall width of the range itself as 31". This is due to the overhang or overlap of the cooktop surface. Drop-In Ranges will always have an overhanging cooktop.
What size cabinet do you need for a 30-inch wall oven? A 30-inch wall oven may require a cabinet size that's approximately 33 inches wide. A general rule of thumb is to add an extra 3 inches wider than the wall oven.
For example, a wall oven that requires a 30-inch width cutout may measure around 28 ½ inches wide.
A minimum of 12 inches of landing space on one side of the stove, and another 15 inches on the other side, are the required landing area widths. As this is hardly enough room to set a single pot or pan, this should be considered an absolute bare minimum, with greater widths highly recommended.
In general, single-oven commercial-style ranges fall between 30 to 36 inches wide. Double-oven commercial-style ranges can run 48 to 60 inches wide, and sometimes more. Commercial-grade ranges designed for restaurants may offer even more size variation.
Almost all require some space to the side of the unit. Most are around 5", but I've seen as little as 2" and as much as 10". I would not advise against placing the stove right up against the wall. You are creating a fire hazard (the current installation sounds like a sub-standard set-up that you should repeat).
While it will vary based on the model, most 30-inch ranges will provide you with at least 4 burners on the stovetop. It will also include an oven that has a capacity of at least 4.2 cubic feet. The 30-inch range is the perfect size for a normal family kitchen.
How do I know what size stove to buy?
Simply measure from the back to the front of the proposed space, only measuring to the front of the cabinets. Consider how much space you'll need when the oven doors are fully open. As a rule of thumb, it's best to leave 42" – 48" between the front of the stove and any cabinets or kitchen islands.
It's easy to scorch food if you're using a smaller pan than is appropriate for the burner, Blechar explained, and if the burner is much smaller than the pan, it will take much longer for the food to cook correctly. Pay attention to the size of the burner versus the pan.
What is a Slide-In Range? A slide-in range is designed to slide in and fit flush with your countertop. This is ideal for an island peninsula, but can also be used along a wall. Slide-in ranges have a slightly protruding cooktop that rests on top of the countertop on each side.
Slide-in ranges are not installed directly against a wall, sitting a few inches away from it. Because of this, there is usually a few inches of countertop space that wraps around the back of the cooktop.
Depending on the manufacturer, some slide-in ranges will sit flush with your cabinets, while others will be a few inches deeper. You want your range, not including the door, to be flush with your kitchen cabinets. If it's not, you will need a counter strip in the back.
Wolf recommends using a 33" (838) wide cabinet with the 30" (762) framed electric cooktop.
Width and depth are standard across all models. You only need to measure the height of your space. For built-in models, the height is around 90cm and it'll only fit at eye-level. If you want one under a countertop, you'll need to find a built-under double oven which will measure around 70cm tall.
Base cabinet size
To determine the maximum sink size for your base cabinet, measure the interior of your cabinet and subtract two to three inches from each dimension. A 36″ base cabinet can handle a 33″ sink at most; a 30″ cabinet should be fitted with a sink no larger than 27″ wide.
Built In Oven Ventilation Requirements
You need at least 5mm of space along the sides of the built in oven. If the top of the oven is flush with the worktop, this is fine.
Plan to have at least 8 inches of clearance on the right and left sides of your oven, and at least 4 inches of space above your oven between any cabinetry.
Should top of stove be even with countertop?
The top of your stove should be ideally level with the top of the counter or slightly higher if needed to avoid heat from the cooktop damaging the counter over time. For this reason and others, you should choose your appliances before finalizing measurements on your kitchen cabinets.
Use a silicone material if there is any height difference between your stovetop and the counter. Silicone is more flexible and will fit the form better. Use stainless steel gap covers to match a metal stove-top seamlessly.
If no wall protection is used, the common radiant-type stove or heater must be spaced out at least 36 inches from the wall. This distance may be reduced considerably if asbestos millboard and/or 28 gage sheet metal is used for wall protection.
Make sure there is at least 20 inches of open space in front of the oven so you can fully open the door to load and unload your food.

You need a backsplash in your kitchen to protect the wall behind your stove from heavy grease and cooking stains. A backsplash protects the back wall from water damage and moisture buildup too.
Electrical appliances – Since most of the kitchen appliances are related to fire they should be placed in the southeast direction. As always don't keep them in the northeast direction.
For gas cooking surfaces or range, a minimum ventilation level of 100 CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute) per 10,000 BTU is recommended. However, the hood must have a minimum of 500 CFM of ventilation power.
All gas cookers must have 20mm of free space on either side or as stipulated in the manufacturer's instructions. Brand new gas cookers installed in flats must feature a 'Flame Supervision Device'. This detects whether a flame has been extinguished and will then automatically turn off the gas supply to the burners.
Why does a gas range not need to be vented? It's a common misconception that a gas range does not need to be vented. Opening windows and doors helps, but a range hood will provide the best ventilation. While it's true that gas ranges produce a small amount of harmful contaminants, they will build up over time.
Can you have a stove without a vent?
It is not safe to cook without a range hood. Everyday cooking produces harmful contaminants including carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, and more. Without proper ventilation, these toxins sit in your kitchen and move to other areas of your home.
Across the United States, the majority of residential homes cooking with gas do not need to vent their range. However, just because you don't have to does not mean that you shouldn't. If you use a commercial-style range, then you will be required to do so.
Gas ranges require a 6" side wall clearance above the counter height for proper distance from combustible surfaces. Select models may only require a 3" left side wall clearance based upon the burner configuration.
But the oven door typically sticks out a couple of inches, which protects the surrounding cabinetry from damage. Depending on the manufacturer, some ovens stick out further than others. More than two inches is fine, but you don't want to install an oven that won't stick out that far. It could be a safety hazard.
